A Message From The Editor:
Welcome to issue 3-1 of Amy Today. This is the eighth issue of
Amy Today that has been published and things are only getting
better. The number of downloads on GEnie and Plink are higher
than I ever expected (Thanx everyone!) and I'm finally starting
to get response on a regular basis.
This might be the longest issue of Amy Today ever published. I
kept finding new information to put in the "Happenings" section.
I hope you enjoy the information that I have found and I hope you
find it useful and entertaining.
Like always (getting sick of hearing this yet?), I am looking for
reader-support in the way of articles or short programs you would
like to share with the Amiga community. If you would like to
contribute please contact me at one of the locations printed in
the magazine's cover/title section. All good PD/shareware
software will also be mentioned or reviewed if it is sent to Amy
Today.
Keep distributing Amy Today and I'll keep publishing it! Enjoy
the issue and, unfortunately, the closing week(s) of summer!
John Rydell
(Editor)

Distributing "Amy Today":
Amy Today is what I call a public domain file-based magazine.
This means that I would like to be given credit to anything taken
from the magazine and I request that the magazine remains "AS
IS". Please do not modify it in any way if you are going to
distribute it.
About Distributing: Please upload Amy Today EVERYWHERE! This
magazine simply will not flourish if it is not uploaded whenever
possible. Every issue is kept under 15,000 bytes ARCed so that
upload/download time should never be a problem. So, please, if
you have the chance spread the magazine around the country! Give
a copy to your friend! Keep Amy Today alive and going strong!

Amy Input:
Dear John,
I enjoyed reading your disk-magazine very much and want to thank
you for a fine piece of work. I am a member of the Capital
District Amiga users group and will see to it that our newsletter
editor receives a copy of Amy_Today. Once again, thank you for
the fine job you are doing with your magazine.
Sincerely yours,
Herb Brown
Amy Input is a column where our readers have a chance to express
themselves. All submitted "input" will be considered for
publication. Letters are sometimes edited slightly for the sake
of space but no opinion or information will be modified in any
way.

The Great Picture Trade:
The Great Picture Trade is still taking place! Anyone who sends
me a disk with at least one of their favorite pictures on it will
have their disk mailed back to them filled with pictures that
others have sent and that I have collected. Disks must be
accompanied by a SASE (Please enclose enough postage to get the
disk back to you--I'm running low on stamps!) and sent to:
Amy Today
Amiga Picture Trade
640 Willowglen Rd.
Santa Barbara, CA. 93105
I would also appreciate more than one picture be sent to make a
better collection to choose from. A final request that I have is
that you specify if you would like nudes included on your disk.
I have been receiving quite a few of these and have not sent any
out because I do not want to offend anyone. If you want nudes
included, please specify this. Otherwise none will be sent.

Amiga Happenings:
(John Rydell)
Discovery Software-
I wrote to Discovery about the fact that original owners of
Arkanoid paid more for the game and received less than the new
owners. Discovery made it clear that I could return my original
Arkanoid disk for an upgrade to the new version. I assume that
this upgrade deal is available to all of the original owners.
(Those of us who only got 33 of the now 66 levels are considered
the "original owners".)
Rocket Ranger-
The new arcade hit, Rocket Ranger, is now available. According
to many sources this is a fantastic game. It retails for $49.95
but can be picked up as low as $32.97 from companies like Wild
Wares (look for the advertisement later in the issue).
AmiExpo-
Just a reminder that AmiEXPO will be taking place from Friday,
October 7, 1988 until Sunday, October 9 in Los Angeles. It
promises to be a good show (maybe we'll even have a chance to
pick up 1.3...) For more information or a reservation call (800)
32-AMIGA or in New York (212) 867-4663.
VirusX-
Steve Tibbett has released versions 2.00 and 2.01 of his Virus
detector program. Versions 2.00 and 2.01 are VERY similar. 2.01
was only released because users were complaining of system-
crashes while using 2.00. The new version is a little longer,
can be run without RUN or RUNBACK, and provides information with
the touch of an "I". Version 2.00 can be found on GEnie file #
4945 and #13446 on Plink. Version 2.01 is # 13539 on Plink.
Badge Killer Demo Contest-
The First Annual Badge Killer Demo Contest is taking place. If
you would like to enter you must write a letter of intent by
September 15, 1988 (Yes, you must hurry!). Then, the final demos
are due on September 29th. For more information read file #
13556 on Plink. Mail questions, comments, and the demos to:
Randy Spencer
Killer Demo Contest
Box 4542
Berkeley, CA. 94704
Access!1.4 Scripts-
In follow up to my review of Access!1.4 I will now report that
two scripts are available on Plink. They are file #'s 13495 and
13404.
Pirating!-
Hans Mayor of Bit Soft Programming has announced that a program
with a name similar to "Master Cruncher" has been stolen from his
company and placed in the Public Domain. This program is NOT
Public Domain. The group of pirates edited out the copyright
notice and gave themselves credit. Please delete this file
everywhere you find it. It may have at least one deadly bug as
it was not ready to be released yet. Spread the news!

For further information check file #4951 on GEnie.
Commodore-
This is getting old now but I still don't have version 1.3 of
WorkBench. We must be getting close, though, because everyone
seems to be referring to 1.3 as the standard now. I'm looking
forward to having FFS for my new hard drive!
Amiga Happenings is a column dedicated to giving you information
on what is happening in the Amiga community. Some of the
information could possibly be wrong due to the fact that I am
trying to get early information. I do not in any way guarantee
that the information will be accurate although I will try my
hardest to protect the innocent.
>>If you have some new information you would like to share please
submit it to Amy Today.

IntelliType:
(John Hallett)
IntelliType is, as the title says, an intelligent typing tutor.
It customizes typing drills according to your most common
mistakes. It will recognize and drill you on 27 different typing
errors that are most common. It will also give you a bar graph
analysis of the speed and accuracy of each letter you have typed.
IntelliType is supposed to teach you to touch-type proficiently
in 30 days (30 lessons, 1 each day). IntelliType also gives you
an adventure story in a "James Bond" type of setting to make you
more eager for the next lesson.
With IntelliType booted, and the icon selected, a few moments
will pass and IntelliType will ask for your "STUDENT" disk (you
need a blank disk so it can store the information on your typing
skills). It will ask your name, age, the date, course emphasis
(emphasize speed, accuracy, or both), length of course (every day
for 30 days or every other day for 60 days). It will later give
you a diagnostic test. This test will check your typing skill
level, and thus determine what you will need practice on. After
each lesson, IntelliType will show you the bar graphs, and also
the overall performance. The bar graphs show your performance in
accuracy and speed.
A nice personal touch in IntelliType is the "Prescriptions".
These are either congratulatory statements, or a "prescription"
of what you need to practice on. In my case I needed to do one
lesson ever the next day, because "all proficient typists need a
strong foundation" (as the program put it). Also, it gives a
useful typing hint before each lesson (ex.- "Relax wrists and
fingers"). The manual is pretty thorough giving tips on how to
improve your typing skills. It gives tips on how to pick a time
and place, where to place your fingers on the keyboard (with an
illustration of which fingers press which keys), and your posture
(with a nice illustration of the proper posture) while typing.
Also, toward the back of the manual, it has definitions of all of
the 27 different typing errors. Along with these definitions,
the manual describes how to read your typing analysis bar graphs.
So far, Intellitype seems to be an excellent typing tutor. The
manual is well written, and the lessons are entertaining to type.
The bar graphs, and the previously mentioned "prescriptions" add
a nice personal touch. So far IntelliType appears to be a good
typing tutor. How proficient of a typist I will become will
become evident with time. I will let everyone know how
proficient I am after I complete all of the IntelliType lessons.
IntelliType is made by Moses Ma of Intellisoft Systems
(Electronic Arts), requires 512k, and retails for $49.95. [Not

Ami Exchange Magazine:
(Pat Speer)
Magazines on disk have been around for awhile. All the major PC
brands have had them. However up until recently only one existed
for the Amiga, and it was, in my opinion, just a clone of the
ones that exist for all the other "plain" PC's. Enter Ami
Exchange... dazzling graphics, true stereo sound, digitized and
all, and a whopping 3 disks worth of GREAT stuff! Yes, for your
subscription price of $50.50/year (6 issues) or newsstand price
of $11.95 you get 3 disks, and in the current issue, a record of
AMIGA music is even included.
One of the nice features of A/X is it's unique "magazine driver"
program. This is a sort of shell through which you communicate
with the magazine. You can read articles, view pictures and
animations, listen to music, and even run the programs, and after
each return to where you were in the magazine!
Now don't you single drive users worry, the format has been laid
out to reduce disk swapping to a minimum. The magazine is
bootable and comes on a stripped down Workbench disk.
The current issue, 1.3, is packed with reviews and articles on
the subject of desktop publishing, including an article on
creating your own newsletter. DeluxeMusic is discussed as well as
how to use it and ProMIDI together. An article on MIDI takes the
mystery out of this sometimes hard to understand subject. Of
course I can't forget those amazing scores that are included in
the "SOUNDPAGE". You like games?... well how about tons of
reviews, a demo of "Capone" and a version of Asteroids that is
the closest to the arcade version that I have ever played! If
graphics are more to your liking, check out the included
animations, tutorials on working with VideoScape 3D, undocumented
features of Sculpt 3D, info on DeluxePaint, reviews, and a demo
of Express Paint. For the telecomm enthusiast there are reviews
of the best terminal programs, a collection of utilities which
you can't do without, and even a listing of some of the strange
BBS's in existence. And this is just a sample of what is included
in the current issue. As you can see there is a lot here for your
money!
My overall impression... I am going to subscribe, and if you want
to get the most out of your AMIGA, take my advice and do the
same!

Space Quest:
(John Hallett)
Space Quest is yet another great adventure in the "Quest" series.
It's an animated adventure game (a mixture of arcade and
adventure). To load it, you need to boot up Workbench, then
click on the icon of the Space Quest disk. It loads up, then you
see a nice title screen with some decent music playing. Press
any key, and it will continue. You then find yourself on the
ship "Arcada", with Sariens (space pirates), who have captured
your ship. They took the "Star Generator" that was supposed to
be taken to a solar system with a dying sun. Your mission is
then to find your way off the ship, and destroy the "Star
Generator", (if, and when, you find it) so that the Sariens won't
use it as a weapon.
You control the janitor either with a joystick, mouse, or the
keyboard. You tell the person what to do by typing in the right
action. An example is if you came across an item you want to
pick up. You simply move the character to the item, and type in
"Get (item)", and press [RETURN]. You can control how fast the
character walks (slow, medium, fast). While picking up items, you
can check your inventory, and use certain items. As with most, I
suppose, "Quest" games, you must make sure to get all of the
items you can, as you will need them later. If you don't get
them, you are in a very tight situation. There is a nice feature
I like in Space Quest which is the ability to save as often as
you like. So if you meet unfortunate circumstances, you can
always start back where you last saved.
Space Quest is a humorous and fun adventure game. I like
adventures with both action and thought. The puzzles you must
solve are pretty ingeniously hidden. This requires ingenuity to
solve (which makes it more fun). The outcomes of these puzzles
are humorous to watch, as is the whole game itself. There is
just a tiny part of it that I disliked. The graphics aren't the
best, but are decent (looks like 320 by 200). The graphics are
very similar to the IBM version. It seems the game brought along
some of it's IBM traits when being converted to the Amiga.
The lower quality of graphics in Space Quest is immediately made
up in its entertaining play. (I believe that graphics are
probably similar to other adventure games, as memory requirements
are higher for better graphics). Overall, Space Quest is a game
worth having if you like animated adventure games.
Space Quest is made by Sierra-On-Line, requires 512k, and retails
for $49.95.

Puzzle Page:
(John Rydell)
This is just a reminder that the puzzle contest is still on. So
far I have received two sets of solutions to the puzzles and you
still have a chance to win. As I said in the last issue, I'm
giving everyone until September 20th to turn in their answers.
At that time I will judge the answers I have received and award
10 3&1/2 inch disks to the winner. (Winner will be picked by
random if a tie occurs.) If you wish to participate please send
your NAME, ADDRESS, where you received your copies of Amy Today,
and your answers to the first 10 questions to:
